In 2023, I designed a mobile application as part of a team submission for the FIND IT UGM (Festival of Innovation and Design in IT) competition, where our project successfully ranked among the Top 10 finalists out of hundreds of submissions from universities across Indonesia. The app was created to address the growing need for sustainable energy consumption at the household level by leveraging IoT-based smart monitoring.
The main objective of the app was to help families monitor, control, and reduce their electricity usage in real time, ultimately contributing to a lower carbon footprint. I was responsible for the UX and UI design of the mobile interface, starting with extensive user research to understand behavioral patterns, motivations, and challenges related to energy consumption. This involved surveys, interviews, and contextual inquiries targeting everyday users with limited technical backgrounds.
Using the insights gathered, I iteratively designed and tested a real-time energy dashboard that displayed electricity usage data in a clear and visually accessible format. The dashboard was optimized for readability and quick decision-making, allowing users to identify power-hungry devices and adjust usage accordingly. I also introduced intuitive control features for managing smart appliances, such as scheduling and remote toggling, which helped users manage their energy consumption without disrupting their routines.
To support behavioral change, I enhanced the data visualization with goal-setting elements and eco-friendly insights, and I implemented automated alerts to notify users of unusual consumption patterns. These design decisions significantly contributed to improving user engagement and awareness around energy-saving practices.
The overall experience was designed to be seamless, educational, and empowering, making sustainability more actionable at the personal level. Our team’s holistic approach—combining design, technology, and impact—was recognized by the jury panel, allowing us to secure a position in the Top 10 of FIND IT UGM 2023, a prestigious competition focused on digital solutions for real-world problems.
