Custom Character Illustration

About this Service

Custom character illustration for brands, editorial projects, apparel, merchandise, publishing and other print or digital uses.

I create original character-based artwork with strong personality, expressive linework, dynamic composition, vintage poster energy, pop culture influence and a handcrafted graphic style. The objective is to create one memorable character or creature with a distinctive visual presence.

This service covers the creation of one standalone character illustration only. It does not include the complete design or layout of a poster, cover, garment, advertisement or campaign.

THIS SERVICE INCLUDES:

  • one finished custom character or creature illustration

  • one primary character or creature

  • one pose and one expression

  • one focused visual concept developed from the approved brief

  • one portrait, bust or full-body composition

  • accessories specifically included in the approved brief

  • one transparent, plain or simple graphic background

  • one preliminary composition sketch for approval

  • one consolidated round of revisions at the sketch stage

  • production of the final detailed vector artwork

  • one approved color palette

  • one full-color version

  • one black-and-white version

  • one consolidated round of minor refinements to the final artwork

  • one editable vector master file supplied in one agreed format: CDR, AI or EPS

  • print-ready vector PDF files

  • high-resolution transparent PNG exports

  • JPG preview files

The subject and level of complexity must be reviewed before work begins. Requests involving several characters, complex machinery, numerous accessories, extensive lettering or a detailed environmental scene may require a separate proposal.

CLIENT BRIEF REQUIRED:

Before work begins, the client must provide:

  • a clear description of the character or creature

  • the character’s personality, attitude and overall mood

  • the required pose and expression

  • the preferred portrait, bust or full-body presentation

  • all mandatory clothing, accessories, objects or physical characteristics

  • anything that must not appear in the artwork

  • the intended use of the illustration

  • the target audience

  • the preferred colors and any prohibited colors

  • the required dimensions, format and orientation

  • relevant visual references

  • existing brand guidelines or supplied assets, when applicable

  • any exact wording that must appear, fully checked and approved by the client

  • the requested delivery date, subject to confirmation

Work begins only once the brief, scope, references and required assets have been reviewed and confirmed in writing. The two-week production schedule begins from that point.

CONCEPT AND APPROVAL:

This service includes one focused character concept, one pose, one expression, one composition and one preliminary sketch only.

It does not include several alternative characters, creatures, costumes, poses, expressions, creative directions or sketches from which to choose.

The preliminary composition must be approved before final production begins. Once approved, the character design, physical features, clothing, accessories, pose, expression, composition and overall visual direction are considered locked.

One full-color treatment and its black-and-white adaptation are included. Alternative palettes or additional colorways are not included.

PROJECT MILESTONES:

The kickoff milestone covers review of the brief and references, development of the character concept and delivery of the preliminary composition sketch.

The final-delivery milestone covers production and delivery of the approved final color and black-and-white illustration and the included files.

REVISIONS:

The first included revision round takes place at the preliminary sketch stage. It covers reasonable adjustments to:

  • the pose

  • the expression

  • proportions

  • clothing and accessories already included in the brief

  • placement of the main illustrated elements

  • the simple graphic background

  • details already included in the original brief

The second included revision round takes place after production of the final artwork. It covers minor adjustments to:

  • details

  • linework

  • colors

  • contrast

  • balance

  • cropping

Revisions do not include:

  • a new character or creature concept

  • a different pose or expression

  • a substantially different composition

  • changing from a portrait or bust to a full-body composition, or the reverse

  • adding another character, creature or major object

  • adding clothing, accessories or important features that were not included in the approved brief

  • creating a detailed background or complete narrative scene

  • creating an alternative palette or colorway

  • changing the artistic style

  • requesting a complete or substantial redraw

Any such request will be treated as additional work and quoted separately.

All feedback must be consolidated into one clear message by one designated decision-maker. Delayed feedback or changes to the original brief may affect the delivery date.

FINAL FILES:

The completed character illustration will be supplied in both full-color and black-and-white versions.

The final files include one editable vector master file in the format agreed before work begins, print-ready vector PDFs, high-resolution transparent PNG exports and JPG previews.

The included versions use the same approved character, pose and composition. The black-and-white version is an adaptation of the approved full-color artwork and not a separate concept.

The service includes the standalone character illustration only. Any poster, cover, apparel, packaging, advertising or campaign layout shown in presentation images is a visual mockup and is not included as a final deliverable.

Unused concepts, preliminary sketches, working files, alternative versions and presentation mockups are not included in the final deliverables.

SCOPE EXCLUSIONS:

The following are not included and require a separate proposal:

  • additional characters or creatures

  • alternative poses or expressions

  • character turnarounds or model sheets

  • front, side or back reference views

  • expression sheets

  • costume or accessory variations

  • alternative colorways

  • detailed environments or narrative scenes

  • poster or advertising layouts

  • book, magazine or album-cover layouts

  • apparel or merchandise layouts

  • logo design or brand identity

  • custom lettering or typography systems

  • packaging design

  • social-media templates
