It’s broke

Hmm. I've just contacted over a couple of hundred new prospects. My work is in the best place it could be, plus I've got lead experience. But I can't get anyone to hire me for ❤ nor 💵. Why?

So much is shifting.

If you'd drawn up the comic strip of today's political and economic climate a decade ago, you'd laugh it out of the room. The alt right? Nationalists being interviewed by Gogglebox celebs? The NHS frozen in vice like grip by austerity? Odd caricature buffoons running the free world?

Two of the most important subjects I'd wish they'd taught us at school are:

how to love well; and financial literacy.

Gavin Williamson now there's an idea for you. A friend of mine used to work in the money / trading world. His simple summary for how economics works, it's based on confidence. That makes sense. The alt right and political unease doesn't really brew when everything is just peachy keen and there's plenty of hay to make. Historically it's usually the opposite, targeting a large, poor group of people as the source of blame.

Now please forgive me for jumping to the micro of a waaay bigger problem… So how does this relate to getting hired if you're a designer? Well design is a service. We're B2B. And if 1B isn't getting their cash in, our 6Bs aren't going to get sharpened. I wrote that, made myself laugh thinking, this sentence is incredibly tenuous and relies on a big jump of understanding. 1B meaning one business and 6B is a soft pencil you'd only know, if you grew up on art supplies. It's a crap joke but I might not be bothered to take it out. Sorry if you're having to deal with this right now. Can't win 'em all.

It raises big questions about how to run a design business way more strategically, even if it's just you running it. Why be limited by one country's economic belt tightening? Have you started to sell or connect with clients internationally? Has pressure created opportunity for you?

There's tons of opportunities and a big open door for making money and thriving. Way beyond 🇬🇧👉🗽🌍. Thinking in dollars and globally is a really exciting way of expanding a design business. I'm interested to hear, have you changed how you work?
