Mobile Direct Messaging App Design

I was thinking about the characters in the design process, I didn't want to use stock image portraits, rather I wanted to use a fictional universe from our pop culture. It'd add a spirit to the design, which the audiance can create an organic connection and have some fun. I wanted a minimalistic design, so cartoons would work better. I first added the halloween sponge bob image without thinking about the Bikini Bottom universe idea, then it occured to me and here we are.
