Lakovečky 01

Connecting seemingly weird concepts together. “Lakovečky” is a fancy old Czechoslovakian word for leather loafers 👞 specifically made from full grain shiny leather.

I couldn't get this word out of my head after one of my great friends mentioned it on one of my pictures. Generally speaking, I like talking English since it saves more time and it became my #1 language since I live in Denmark.

However, our Slovakian language & Czech included contains so many funny gems and words just like this one. You cannot really translate them and I love it. I started to think about my cultural background a bit more recently. People often mistake that Slovakia is part of Eastern Europe, which is not true. I don't mind it because I don't want you to know the entire history of Europe, there are more important things to worry about...

I started to embrace where my roots are much more than I used to 1, 2 or 3 years ago. I felt sometimes a bit ashamed when we got into a conversation with someone from "the west" and I had to painfuly describe how Czechoslovakia is not a thing since '93.

I use our language in my designs much more. It also shows how a typeface works with diacritics since that's how we know if the typeface is designed properly — based on performance of diacritics.
