We continue the challenge we started three years ago: #Makeitbetter Meet today's patient – Zoom.us Mac App.

We’ve been using this software for a while and appreciate the high quality of video and audio. Yep, we know about the security issue. But, as The Verge said, they fixed the problem with an emergency patch. Howbeit, this software has become an industry standard for many companies.

As a distributed agency, we use Zoom.us on a daily basis to hop on calls with clients and teammates. Unfortunately, we find the user experience confusing. The Mac App has multiple layers of information and to get a function we need to go on a diving expedition.

One of the main inconveniences we have is how to copy the invitation link. Based on our own experience (we didn’t conduct any outside user research) the algorithm on our quick calls is:

1. A person who wants to discuss something with a colleague pings him/her in Slack or Telegram. 2. When the teammate is available, the organizer opens the Mac App, copies the link to the room and sends it through Slack. 3. The conversation starts.

However, to copy the link you have to open a separate window, and then find a small link-button at the bottom of the popup. These two extra steps feel redundant. And that's just one issue we found.

In general, the logical grouping of functional elements is peculiar. To #Makeitbetter, we created several concepts to modify the main in-call screen layout to make it more intuitive and easy to read/use.

We think using a side menu could help show all the needed functions and make it one-click available. Also, we’d have the side view open after installation and on startup, positioning needed functionality front and center so it’s easy to find. And, after 10-15 calls, the app would give the user the option to hide the sidebar names and leave the icons only. We call this interface behavior "progressive reduction." We believe that each interface should adapt with time and intuitively adjust based on the correlation between time spent in the app and the number of elements we should show.
