Daniel: Changing Times. Unchanging God.

Illustration and identity for a sermon series in the Book of Daniel.

The inspiration for this piece comes from lots of places.

The colors come straight from the Ishtar gate, built by Nebuchadnezzar II, in about the same time that Daniel would have been in Babylon.

The serifed font bound by the rectangular box references Babylonian cuneiform script. Consisting of straight lines and triangles, not unlike the heavy serifs of Poynter Oldstyle. I found many reference images of ancient cuneiforms carved into stone and bordered by rectangular boxes.

The hourglass represents the relentless forward march of time, observed from the outside as I imagine God sees the entirety of history all at once. He is outside of space and time, and thus is unchanging even when everything in our world seems to be unstable.
