G is for Gak

Gak was Nickelodeon and Mattel's most popular compound. The idea was taken from the Nickelodeon show Double Dare and Wham-O's Super Stuff from the mid-1960s. The original edition was manufactured in 1992. It was marketed on the fact that, unlike most of the slime compounds, it made a "fart" noise when squeezed into its clear, star-shaped container.

The name "gak" had previously been used by Marc Summers and the Double Dare crew to refer to slime used on the show. Nickelodeon had no idea that the word Gak was a popular euphemism for heroin used in good old Philadelphia. Selling Gak to kids had a whole new meaning to those in the know.

As we know from Instagram, slime accounts having millions of followers, gooey stuff has a special place in our hearts. I don’t understand why we are so enthralled with it. I did like Gak for making the fart sounds, but I stopped at Pizza scented gak. That was just taking it too far.
