App Icon Design Concept
When a brand redesigns their visual identity, it's usually bittersweet – personally, I miss the original Slack app icon on my smartphone (even though their team has written a fantastic case study on their process).
This inspired me for Daily Design Challenge Day 005 - App Icon Design.
Things that I've learned:
- Apps such as Bear and iA Writer allow users to select which app icon they want to use. I love customizing icons based on light or dark UIs 🖤
- What I loved about Slack's original app icon was colorful bands framing the "S" logomark — since I want to create an app that starts with an "S," I wanted to use this as inspiration to test whether this theory holds (answer: it does).
- Color theory matters. Vibrant palettes can excite and attract — even a slight error in shade or placement can made a design look muddy, illegible, or too chaotic.
- Testing this on multiple iOS Home screens, this design matches well with standard Apple icons and contrasts enough with third-party icons — though given more time, I might've made the "S" logomark more unique or branded to the app concept.
