The Nobility of the Early Scripts

The 9th Century Abbasid Caliph Al-Ma’mun is believed to have said: “[Calligraphy causes] the star of wisdom to shine in the darkness of ink.” As per this 9th century Quran page example, the early kufic styles are characterised by bold letter-shapes in dark brown ink written against starkly contrasting light coloured parchment.
