Typographic Map of Scotland

A typographic map of Scotland created in Adobe Illustrator, and using both Google Maps as a placename reference and Bebas Neue by Dharma Type. The composition features 1770 placenames and a custom made tartan pattern for the background.

It was created primarily out of experimentation, as I had been doing this kind of experiment for a few years now. I wanted to focus on detail rather than creating an image of Scotland out of few placenames.

Shetland could not fit on typical canvasses without requiring the rest of Scotland to shrink, so to preserve detail it was represented inside a box.

Overall, I spend about a week on the typography design and a further week trying to find a right background that fit with the design.
