8 - Eight Planets in our Solar System. The four inner rocky planets were born in a molten state from the heat of collisions and suffered heavy meteorite bombardment. The four large gas giants have atmospheres of hydrogen and helium. These four have rings of rock and ice, remnants from moons that were broken by these giants’ powerful gravitational fields.
