Mavis Design Postcard Detail
MAVIS: Design MA Brochure & Postcards
I attempted to distill the general feeling of this brand new course into a few comprehensive ideas: most importantly I understood the course to be aimed at students with real-world experience, and their practical knowledge and maturity would help shape the direction of their individual course. This non-prescriptive nature coupled with a globally reaching design conversation would make Mavis: Design a unique, ideas-based MA. I wanted to capture the ethos without subscribing to a particular design aesthetic and I aimed to include a variety of snippets of design conversation, often conflicting, but all equally important. Metaphorically I saw reflections and stencil type as tools I could use to reference the individual nature of the course and the "stamp" that each student would put on it. To this end I created a custom stencil typeface based on Avenir Heavy and used mirrors to reflect and distort it. I broke apart the portions of the letterforms to create visual devices which I used to hint at the overarching ideas of the course without fully spelling it out.
