UX: Diary Study

Here is an un-used project that I started at Meitu: a diary study to research global perceptions on beauty and selfie-related topics.

A diary study is a daily log of behaviors that you get a user to respond to over an extended period of time. Users can answer questions through writing, drawing, or picture taking to explain their activities or feelings across the course of their day. I chose this method because it can be done remotely - shipped back and forth across the world. It can also track more tactical information over a longer period of time, than would be possible in a remote interview.

Paper prototyping is a method of rapid prototyping by using paper, tape, scissors, pen, and glue to quickly flesh out ideas. (I happened to find some pink and white paper in the headquarters office, as you can see!)

I chose paper prototyping (at first), because I imagined sending a whole kit in a box - for a week's worth of activities - and candy or gift card rewards after each completed day. This was really helpful in getting people's thoughts on the size and level of information.

After testing it on a few colleagues, we decided on reducing the kit down to a single notebook that people could carry with them throughout their day - and more easily keep track of. There would be a digital version of the same notebook as well - for those who preferred to respond instead on the web or mobile.

This was insightful and more accessible. So I began experimenting with a single notebook digital PDF example that I found open sourced by a UX Research team: Amberdew User Experience - www.amberdew.com.au. Feel free to use it!

Recruiting was to be done by each regional manager putting out some flyers across town and the web, then using a Typeform survey to pre-screen candidates. And Calendly to schedule an initial call. However, this work became overshadowed by some other pressing design deadlines. I hope to use the method in the future.
