Bodoni as Iconography
I encountered an interesting problem last night while working on a tattoo for my wife (@Jenny Emick)–design an icon that feels like an extension of the typeface Bodoni. This problem got me thinking more broadly about the use of iconography; as a supportive element, locked up with type, implemented in lieu of type, embedded within a line of type, as a primary graphic element, etc.
While I haven't achieved perfect harmony between this form and the cap glyphs of Bodoni, it has been interesting trying to identify which elements of the typeface I need to emulate in order to make the icon feel like a derivation of the type. In this example, I'm trying to mimic the vertical stress angle, the height of the cap 'X', the width of the cap 'W', the stroke weight/contrast, the counter space (the dot on the wing was used to distinguish the icon as a plane).
If anyone has information about this iconographic approach, please share it!
