A "master study" is a fine arts term for using a master artist's work as an exercise and learning material. Painters would replicate Rembrandt, Monet, Manet, etc to learn from their expertise.

In many ways, we do the same in the digital design industry, but maybe not so explicitly–or we don't share that part of our education.
