National Donut Day

Happy National Donut Day! I just learned the backstory for this magical day. Back in 1917 during World War I, Helen Provience and Margaret Sheldon of The Salvation Army were serving on the front lines in France. They used the limited resources to create donuts to comfort the soldiers with food from back home. These donuts were fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar. The soldiers loved the "doughnuts" so much that they referred to the Salvation Army Lassies as "doughnut girls." In 1938, The Salvation Army started this holiday to honor these women.
