User onboarding and the many ways to go about it, there seems to be a wealth of great methods to lift our user adoption rate. To accomplish that goal, any onboarding process should be seamless and low on cognitive overload.

The Mango design team believes apps should be intuitive, easy to to adopt out of the box. To honor the spirit of plug & play, our onboarding experience needed to feel tactful, an enhancement providing just enough info without obstructing the language learning experience.

We tinkered with the approach of your typical intro onboarding slides and came to the conclusion this method would ultimately place a drag on the experience. We much rather have our members and guests jump right into learning and adopt ui behaviors as they move through the app rather than over pack their noggins at the start of their journey with too much info they may have a hard time recalling later when they need it most.

After some time we landed on an approach we're labeling as "interstitial onboarding" and to help our users strengthen their experience we're implementing a "recall" trigger. The recall trigger will allow a user to reveal tool tips at any given location through out the app simply by double tapping the screen after the user has engaged the initial lesson onboarding slide.
