The Legend of Lockhart
Working on a piece for a heart themed group show opening around Valentines Day. I decided to illustrate the story of my ancestor, Symon Locard, and the origin of our last name "Lockhart".
He was a knight in the service of Robert the Bruce in the early 14th century. When the Bruce died, he was entrusted the key to the small casket containing his heart. He rescued the heart from Spain during the crusades and returned to bury it in Scotland where it remains today under the Melrose Abbey.
Our name "Lockhart" means "keeper of the heart" and our motto "Corda Serrata Pando" translates to "I open locked hearts."
