Octopus Rig

Week 05: Octopus Rig

There comes a time during every New Year's commitment when you have to force yourself to do it. This week was one of those weeks - I just plumb ran out of time, and had to think of something quick on Sunday evening after the kids were in bed.

I had this idea earlier to mess with spline dynamics in C4D and attach them to a simple octopus model. I think the idea came up when I was watching the special features for Finding Dory and I heard that the character "Hank" was one of the most difficult rigs Pixar had ever worked on. I thought, "Come on... how hard could rigging an octopus be??"

Well, it's pretty hard. Especially if you want it to have as much control as Hank did. But still, this guy is pretty cute. And I only had to control the torso. Everything else just moves with him!

I didn't have enough time to actually put bones or anything in the legs to add more character movement, or to fix the mesh clipping... what can ya do.
