When I started making simple gifs, it was solely with Photoshop. Then I incorporated Illustrator. The thing is, I was making a jpeg of Every Single Frame which was tedious in itself, not to mention timing and directional issues. Just picked up After Effects and a world of possibilities opened up. Not reinventing the wheel here, mind you, but the fun factor just multiplied by a thousand.
