Logo for "Centre for Musculoskeletal Research" at the UoM
The Centre for Musculoskeletal Research (CfMR) at the University of Manchester sought a logo redesign to reflect its evolving vision under new leadership. The goal was to create a modern, inclusive visual identity that better communicated the Centre’s commitment to interdisciplinary research in musculoskeletal health.
Working closely with Professor Kimme L. Hyrich, I developed a refreshed brand mark that aligns with both the Centre’s scientific mission and the University's visual identity guidelines.
About the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research (CfMR)
The CfMR is a leading UK-based research group dedicated to improving outcomes for individuals living with musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Their multidisciplinary team includes clinicians, epidemiologists, geneticists, and laboratory scientists who collaborate to investigate disease causes, monitor trends, assess treatments, and enhance quality of life across all age groups.
Design Objectives
► Reinforce brand recognition by prominently featuring the acronym “CfMR”
► Include the full name: Centre for Musculoskeletal Research
► Move away from clinical or intimidating imagery, such as skeletons, in favor of a welcoming, modern aesthetic
► Symbolically represent both clinical and scientific focus through visual elements (e.g., joint + DNA strand)
► Incorporate the University of Manchester’s signature purple to maintain visual alignment with the broader institutional brand
► Ensure versatility across scientific publications, presentations, and public-facing materials
Design Concept
The final logo combines a stylized joint structure with an intertwined DNA strand to reflect the integration of biology and musculoskeletal health research. The bold, clear typography emphasizes CfMR, while the color palette ensures visual consistency with the broader university brand.
Outcome
The refreshed logo provides a professional, meaningful identity that resonates with both scientific and public audiences. It reflects CfMR’s multidisciplinary work and vision for a future where all people with musculoskeletal disease can live their best lives.
