Play-Doc film festival, edition XXI (2025)
Every year since 2004 the city of Tui (Galicia, Spain) organizes and hosts the Play-Doc international movie festival. As a huge fan, I decided to design an entire visual identity for this year's XXI edition, dedicating it to the late David Lynch, a cinema icon who sadly passed away at the beginning of this year.
I decided to keep only the logotype that has represented the festival throughout the years and is its most recognizable element. As far as the color scheme and other design elements, I drew inspiration from David Lynch's movies and art (he was also a painter, sculptor and musician).
In this poster I designed for the festiwal, I went for a bold black Play-Doc logotype as the main visual element. It stands out against the beige background and the thin-line illustrations I created myself. The illustration of David Lynch sitting on a chair is a piece that appears on various assets, also animated (similarly to the other illustrations).
Each of these illustrations represents one of David Lynch's movies or TV shows (from left to right): Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Rabbits, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. In the poster, the illustrations are connected with hand-drawn red lines as an homage to David Lynch's simplistic and symbolic art with its bold colors and brute style, almost resembling the doodles of a child.
As for the merch commonly associated with the festival, I decided to use the same colors as in the poster, and add a deep forest green. These colors (black, beige, red and green) not only complement each other but also stand out on clothes and in any other festival setting.
The employees of the festival get red badges, immediately identifiable in the crowd. As for the special guests, their badges are green to indicate their special access to various festival activities and locations. The spectators can purchase button badges in various colors associated with the festival.
To keep the festival's long-standing merch tradition, I also designed tote bags and mugs, a Play-Doc staple and everyone's favorite.
A novelty in this year's edition (or at least my version of it) are the sunbeds available for the outdoor movie sessions, as well as real paper tickets, something I miss at the Play-Doc festival. Usually the tickets are electronic only but for this year's Play-Doc I suggest a paper version the guest can keep as a souvenir.
