Virtual Mix Rack 3.0 ✨
Redesigning Slate Digital’s Virtual Mix Rack – a fresh GUI with new macro controls, while keeping the soul of a classic. A UX-heavy challenge, brewed with way too much coffee ☕️
Hey, it’s been a while since I posted anything here — but a few months ago, something pretty cool happened at Slate Digital!
I got the chance to redesign Virtual Mix Rack as we introduced macro controls. It was a big challenge, especially on the UX design side. VMR has been around for years and has a strong identity, so the goal was to refresh the look without losing the product’s soul — while adding some more complex controls on top of that.
Despite the complexity (too much coffee and a fair share of grumbling on my side), I think we pulled it off! Hopefully 😄
As always, lots of love and teamwork with my favorite C++ wizards.

UX Exploration – Virtual Mix Rack Redesign
Before jumping into visuals, I spent time exploring how to integrate the new macro controls into the existing VMR experience. The challenge was to preserve the product’s familiar workflow while introducing more complex interactions — without overwhelming the user. These wireframes capture early UX thinking around layout, control accessibility, and interaction flows.
UX/Product Design
UI work was done in close collaboration with the talented team at Merge, who helped bring extra polish to key parts of the interface Preset Browser.
