Welcome to the Wines of the World series, where today we're spotlighting Chateauneuf du Pape. Recently, I’ve become captivated by the incredible diversity of wines from around the globe. Inspired by my New Year's resolution to create a new piece of work every day, I’ve embarked on designing a unique wine label for each type of wine I explore, capturing the essence and story behind each varietal.
About The Design
The design of Pontifica is rich, dramatic, and ecclesiastical—fitting for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a wine historically tied to the papacy. The name Pontifica evokes grandeur, ritual, and religious authority, which is reflected in the ornate still-life floral painting that dominates the label, reminiscent of Dutch Golden Age altar pieces or cathedral ornamentation. The typeface is tall and elegant with a slightly exaggerated curve, almost calligraphic, lending a ceremonial feel. Its metallic red hue contrasts boldly against the black background, adding a sense of opulence and reverence. A vertical red stripe down the capsule suggests a liturgical stole, tying the whole presentation together in a visually powerful nod to the wine’s papal roots.
About Châteauneuf du Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a prestigious red wine from the southern Rhône Valley in France, known for its bold, full-bodied character and complex blend of grape varieties. Typically led by Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and up to a dozen other permitted grapes, it delivers rich flavors of dark fruit, herbs, spice, and earth, often with a distinctive garrigue (wild herb) note. The wines are structured, age-worthy, and often quite powerful, yet can show elegance with time. While reds dominate, there are also small amounts of white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which are full, textured, and aromatic. It's a wine with deep history, once favored by the popes in Avignon, and continues to carry a sense of tradition and prestige.
