Why Metal Sisters ?
Metal is a genre deeply rooted in masculinity, often leaving little space for women, especially on stage. Female musicians in metal sometimes face challenges in being taken seriously. Our project seeks to address the issue of representation and recognition of women in the metal scene, while providing a platform for them to connect with others to form bands and collaborate.
Metal Sisters is a fictional association dedicated to empowering women in metal. Its missions include: raising awareness about the lack of female representation in extreme music within a welcoming, mixed audience; promoting female-led metal bands; and creating a strong sense of sisterhood and community, as many women in metal may feel isolated or out of place within the broader scene for various reasons. We believe in uplifting one another, sharing experiences, and building a space where every woman can thrive in her love for metal.
What Does This Project Entail?
This project spans across several platforms:
An app, inspired by the flow of a dating app, that allows female musicians to find bands to join or enables bands searching for female musicians to connect with them.
An interactive website aimed at raising awareness within the metal community (specifically metal fans, not a general audience) about the challenges faced by women in the scene, encouraging them to reflect on existing issues.
A series of merchandise items that reflect metal culture, such as patches, stickers, and eco-cups, with measurements on the cups that highlight the proportion of women in the metal scene.
The Metal app
To connect women in metal with each other, empowering the creation of bands featuring women who are not just singers or violinists.
The Metal merch
To promote concerts of bands formed through Metal Sisters, while also sharing stickers, ecocups and patches at festivals and bars.
The Metal content
To raise awareness among the public in key contexts, such as festivals, with key statistics on the issue that Metal Sisters is working to address through its app.
