Rollers & Barrels - Logo concept
Notes on the design
Monoline illustration done in Procreate.
This started as a logo concept for a client that was rejected, so I've repurposed it for a personal faux brand project.
The mark is hand drawn for imperfection and character. Meant to represent a simple, iconic set of rolling waves, with clean, linear repetition and the symbolic curvatures of the tube/barrel. Framed like looking out at the lineup from the shoreline. Angled in sequence to create the sense of rhythmic motion.
I digitally painted the background with the Wonder brush from the @RSCO Woodland set. With a surf break in mind, I was trying to create something that felt like being in crashing wave and looking down through the churning water to ocean floor and sea life below. This texture may be a little rough and ragged to accurately simulate water but I still really like the effect.
I used an ocean-inspired palette in order to accentuate the white line work of the logo and more strongly convey the iconic shape, curve, and rhythm of a wave.
The story behind the piece
The faux brand concept is called 'Rollers & Barrels' (aka the new R&B) - a surf apparel and lifestyle brand, with a minimalist, psychedelia-adjacent aesthetic, for landlubbers and poseurs.
