BSS NEWSLETTER - Lead Editor for Bristol City Council
Over Four Years of Editorial Content Creation
During my time as Editor for Bristol City Council's Newsletter, I have created well over 40 separate editions which have been distributed to the entirety of the council's staffing populous.
As editor, I was entrusted with respective control over design and colour choices, branding, imagery, layout, font and typographic elements and I had personally designed each of the theme templates myself. I had even created bespoke newsletter editions for the holiday issues to separate them from the typical issue and to promote a fun and engaging experience that our staff would look forward to each month.
Whilst lead-editor of the newsletter, our service had undergone a full-rebrand: from ABS (Administrative Business Support) to the newly reformed BSS (Business Support Service). This change had impacted my office particularly and had meant a large-scale revision of all design elements, branding and associated graphics mid-way through the life-cycle of our second year of issue.
I have displayed the re-branded newsletter directly below. This issue #22 shows our Second Anniversary, which I had tailored to suit a silvered finish, which complemented both the re-brand and the style of the first anniversary issue, which I had chosen to display in a gold flake, chosen to proudly boast our prevalent successes for the initial brief and beyond: creating a sense of community and a hub to reliably preview new information and changes around the council.
Proof of Concept.
Due to GDPR and Data Protection, I have redacted all of the sensitive information throughout the newsletter segments displayed in each excerpt. This allows me to display this work within my portfolio securely and without compromising the design elements for each publication.
Below, I have provided a full-length newsletter Issue to demonstrate the typical quality of work, content delivery, as well as the expectations for editorial development that were demanded throughout my career, designing at BCC.
A Brand New Template
In the initial creation of the ABS Newsletter, I had proposed a brand new format to host our publication on, as opposed to within the body of an email; which I was able to tailor to each individual release and which would allow accessibility to those previewing the files with visual impairments such as colour-blindness and to allow compatibility when using a text-to-speech program.
