LSUA Makerspace Interior Branding

Design has the power to transform spaces, and this project for LSUA’s new Makerspace was focused on sparking creativity. The interior branding initiative featured a unique wall decal to inspire students as they interact with advanced technology, such as 3D printers and laser cutters.

The centerpiece of this project is a large-scale wall graphic featuring LSUA’s beloved mascot, Tank—reimagined in a robotic form, actively using a 3D printer. This design element took approximately seven hours to complete in Adobe Illustrator, incorporating futuristic elements to align with the innovation happening in the Makerspace.

The initial phase of the design process began with research into modern tech-inspired aesthetics. I explored how geometric shapes, bold typography, and dynamic layouts could reinforce the Makerspace’s mission of innovation. Outlining multiple concepts helped refine the composition before moving into digital production. I wanted to ensure the robotic version of Tank felt both mechanical and expressive, capturing a balance between technology and personality. Once the core illustration was set, I focused on integrating dynamic type treatments and directional elements that guide the viewer’s eye across the space.

My first draft of the artwork included construction elements like tools and metal. The lower third of the wall decal originally featured stylized textures that mimicked corrugated metal, similar to shipping containers. However, these elements ultimately felt too industrial and overly stylized for the branding. Instead, I transitioned to more abstract geometric shapes that align with LSUA’s existing brand, ensuring the design could be more seamlessly integrated across multiple applications.

My goal with this design was to create a space that fuels curiosity and motivation. The phrase Create Without Limits, a play on the university’s tagline*,* emphasizes the endless possibilities available to students. With the Makerspace serving as a hub for hands-on learning, the branding needed to reflect the spirit of invention and discovery. Each design element was intended to be multi-purpose, allowing them to be easily adapted for promotional items and other marketing materials.

Once the designs were finalized in Illustrator, the next step was preparing the artwork for production. This involved adjusting scaling, ensuring color accuracy, and formatting the file for large-format printing. Given the complexity of the shapes and gradients, I worked closely with the printing team to maintain clarity and vibrancy in the final output. The installation required precise alignment to ensure the visual elements flowed seamlessly along the wall’s surface, creating a cohesive and immersive environment.
