Simplified Tarot card Project

The idea is to create tarot cards in nearly in a very symbolic, stylized and simplified way that best represents each suit, its meaning, and how many elements are involved with each suit. It was a difficult and thought provoking project that had many hurdles

Back Design

For the back of the card I designed, it was a simple design that incorporated all the opposing shapes that are design opposites for each minor suit card. Its a simple environment.

Major

each major card is designed as simple as possible to what each card represents in tarot.

The most abstract ones are a bit harder to define "temperance" is in this example but for each card design ive seen temperance has a commonality where it represents hot and cold, 2 opposites inside of each opposing side

Wands

Wands were the most difficult suit to design as it is only 3 triangles, there are several configurations that could have been done and made but personally i felt that these designs best represented each shape.

The Wands is a suit that represents creation/creativity and Ambition, the use of a triangle is a perfect representation as it points in one direction either honing in or flaring out

Swords

Swords were slightly less difficult but it was still just as difficult to represent each suit as making everything out of boxes makes things super flat and less dynamic. However there were ways where I was able to make things look dynamic and interesting

The Swords is a suit that represents one Internal mind and Intellect, the use of a square is a good representation as it usually grounded, structurally sound and very mold-able.

Pentacles

Although this card seems less inspired than the previous cards, lots of thought went into these designs as i felt a 4 pointed star blob like shape was a fun one to play around with, This was the first design i started with in the project and was a great starting point seeing where and how i can build all of these cards and have a similar type of theming surround each one.

Pentacles represent stability, practicality, and determination. You can reach for the stars or get your gears going as everything fits into place and is a fun organic shape

Cups

Lastly we have cups, similarly to pentacles these dont change their shape too much however it was incredibly interesting trying to define all of these designs in abstract ways without going too far and deforming the shape, to keep everything simple i stayed with only circles and played with ideas on how circles can represent what each card defines.

Cups represent emotions, relationships, intuition, and the subconscious these are very fluid and difficult to pinpoint. By hardening the edges and keeping it easily definable you can view these abstract feelings

I want to say thank you for viewing this project it was a very long and fun project, and i encourage you to look through your favorite cards and come to a conclusion on what you think it may represent and look up what it means. Treating it as almost as a Rorschach test, instead of 'overly complex' unidentifiable shapes we use 'under-complex' shapes that could be placed.

The goal was to make this deck of 78 to be universally understood in a way where the words wouldn't matter with incredibly simple shape language
