Concept of the Vienna U-Bahn Map
Navigating a metro system should be intuitive, efficient, and visually clear
Context: A self-initiated redesign of the Vienna U-Bahn map, exploring clarity, typographic hierarchy, and simplified routing logic
Challenge: Create a cleaner, more intuitive representation of Vienna’s underground network while maintaining geographic coherence and system identity
This redesign of the Vienna U-Bahn map was inspired by the structural clarity of the Moscow Metro map — aiming to bring the same level of precision and balance to Vienna’s transit system
How it was built
Redesigned line geometry with uniform angles and reduced overlap
Applied a custom typographic system for station names, ensuring consistent spacing and direction
Color-coded lines based on the official palette, with refined contrast for better screen and print use
Simplified transfer node visuals for faster route planning at a glance
My role & solution
Concept design and full execution of layout
Integrated visual rhythm across dense and sparse areas without compromising legibility
Used real transport data as a base, then restructured for user-centric flow
This concept is not affiliated with Wiener Linien — it’s a personal design study, created out of passion for urban navigation systems. The redesign has sparked discussion on Reddit. Though unofficial, the map demonstrates strong design system thinking and public transport UI sensibility — adaptable to real-world wayfinding, motion graphics, or broadcast infographics
