Slack Top 8
Have you noticed the new VIP feature in Slack? Apparently, you can now add contacts to a VIP list. I’m not entirely sure what it means or how it differs from starring or favoriting contacts, but it got me thinking about the good old days of the internet—specifically, Myspace and its Top 8 friends.
What if Slack prompted users to display their "Top 8" contacts to the entire workspace? This idea could be a source of joy, friendly competition, and overall fun for some companies or groups. However, on the flip side, I can also see it leading to jealousy, office gossip, and drama.
I remember my high school days when being in someone’s Top 8—especially the coveted number one spot—was truly meaningful. Adding someone to your list was a significant move, and seeing others' Top 8s triggered a rigorous research process to understand their relationships. It was a quintessential high school, coming-of-age, and immature experience.
And honestly, I don’t think we've matured that much since then. So, introducing a Top 8 feature on Slack could stir up the same drama that we like to believe we’ve outgrown.
Have you tried the new VIP feature on Slack? Would you like to see a Top 8 option?
