Custom Rule Creation for Lab Test Processing

Problem

While the application offered automated processing for common test scenarios, laboratory technicians often encountered situations where they needed to define custom rules to accommodate specific testing requirements or exceptions. This limitation hindered flexibility and efficiency in the workflow.

Key Question: How can we provide a user-friendly interface for creating and managing custom rules?

Why

Research revealed several key challenges:

• Limited Flexibility: The lack of custom rule capabilities restricted lab technicians' ability to adapt the application to their specific testing needs. This led to manual work and potential errors.

• Inefficient Workflow: Lab technicians had to request IT support for rule changes, disrupting their workflow and impacting productivity.

By providing lab technicians with the ability to define and manage custom rules, we aimed to enhance flexibility and gain greater control over the application's behavior, adapting it to their specific testing scenarios and requirements.

Solution

We implemented the "Rules" tab within the application where lab technicians can create and manage custom rules for test processing. This tab provides the following functionalities:

• Formula: The interface provides a visual representation of the defined rule, allowing lab technicians to easily review and modify their conditions.

• Condition Editor: A user-friendly interface allows lab technicians to define custom rules using logical operators (AND, OR) and conditions based on organism, antimicrobial, and associated values (MIC, interpretation).

• Rule Management: The tab enables lab technicians to save, edit, copy and delete custom rules, allowing them to create a library of rules tailored to their specific needs.
