Welcome to the Wines of the World series, where today we're spotlighting Mead (not technically a wine) . Recently, I’ve become captivated by the incredible diversity of wines from around the globe. Inspired by my New Year's resolution to create a new piece of work every day, I’ve embarked on designing a unique wine label for each type of wine I explore, capturing the essence and story behind each varietal.

About Mead

Mead: The Ancient Honey Wine

Mead is one of the world’s oldest alcoholic beverages, made by fermenting honey with water and sometimes adding fruits, spices, or herbs. Often referred to as “honey wine,” mead has roots in cultures worldwide, from ancient Scandinavia to Africa and beyond. It has a versatile flavor profile, ranging from dry to sweet, and can be still, sparkling, or even barrel-aged.

Different styles of mead include:

• Traditional Mead: Pure honey, water, and yeast, showcasing the honey’s natural flavor.

• Melomel: Mead with fruits like berries or stone fruits.

• Metheglin: Mead flavored with spices or herbs, such as cinnamon or ginger.

• Cyser: A blend of mead and apple cider.

• Pyment: Mead made with grapes or grape juice.

With ABV typically ranging from 5% to 14%, mead is highly customizable and pairs well with everything from desserts to cheeses and roasted meats. Its resurgence in modern craft brewing and winemaking highlights its timeless appeal and adaptability.

About The Design

The Sweet Temptation Mead label is a beautifully crafted representation of the natural and artisanal qualities of mead. The centerpiece is an intricate, circular illustration that evokes a lush, enchanting garden filled with flora, fruits, and a bee—a direct nod to the honey that forms the foundation of mead. The design feels timeless and organic, drawing the viewer into the rich, earthy world where this ancient beverage originates.

The soft golden hues of the label complement the warm amber color of the mead itself, creating a cohesive visual story that speaks to sweetness and natural abundance. The delicate detailing at the top of the label adds an elegant, vintage touch, emphasizing the craftsmanship and tradition behind the product. The name Sweet Temptation aligns perfectly with the imagery, inviting the drinker to indulge in the lush, honeyed allure of the mead. This design elegantly balances nature, tradition, and a sense of refined indulgence.
