Kentucky Common - Beer Label Design

Beer For Here

Welcome to the "Beer For Here" series. Enjoying a beer is not just about the taste; it's deeply influenced by the surroundings in which you drink it. Inspired by this idea, I've embarked on creating a series of beer labels that encapsulate the essence of various locations and aesthetics—melding the distinctive vibe of each place with the rich history of different beer types. This project aims to transform each sip into a more immersive experience, where the beer and its label are in perfect harmony.

About Kentucky Common

Kentucky Common is a unique historical beer style that originated in Louisville, Kentucky, in the late 19th century. Popular with the working class, it was an affordable, quickly brewed ale designed for rapid consumption, making it a staple of local saloons. Often brewed with a blend of six-row barley, corn, and small amounts of caramel or darker malts, it resulted in a reddish-brown color and a lightly malty, slightly sweet flavor.

Fermented as a clean ale but often served quickly, the beer had a low-to-moderate ABV (around 4-5%) and mild bitterness. What set Kentucky Common apart was its use of locally available ingredients, including a significant proportion of corn, reflecting the region's agricultural abundance.

The style virtually disappeared after Prohibition but has seen a revival in modern craft brewing as a piece of Americana. Kentucky Common is a smooth, easy-drinking beer that offers a glimpse into America's brewing past.

About The Design

This beer label for Kentucky Common elegantly ties the historical beer style to the rich culture of Kentucky through its design. The central imagery features a dynamic depiction of a racehorse and jockey, evoking the state’s famous horse racing heritage and the iconic Kentucky Derby. The lush green background and earthy tones reflect the agricultural roots of the region, which were integral to the creation of the Kentucky Common style, brewed with local ingredients like barley and corn.

The bold, serif typography adds a touch of classic elegance, reinforcing the historical aspect of the beer style. By blending imagery of Kentucky’s racing tradition with the beer’s deep connection to the state’s brewing history, the label perfectly captures the essence of Kentucky Common: a local, enduring legacy.
