Drinky Dinky Still Water Can
The brief:
Drinky Dinky, a quintessential thirst quencher, conceptualised and distributed in the Australian market and designed through That Type Guy Studio.
As shared in a recent showcase, the branding for Drinky Dinky was developed for the sole purpose of garnishing a physical product to quench a thirst for sustainable packaging and a renewed natural-beverage market.
This project was geared toward achieving the next step in that vision: The Can Design.
The objective:
Design a wrap-around can label using the primary Drinky Dinky assets, including important product and brand information, for the pilot launch of the product in late 2023.
The process:
As with any other, the process we undertook was simple: start with a basic idea and build it from there. We had the initial plan to develop both a 250ml and a 500ml can, but toward launch decided the 500ml flagship design would be the best route to double-down on.
This proved helpful both in production, as well as, photoshoots and pilot distribution efforts. This also meant we could focus on a flagship design that would be the cornerstone of further development and size iterations.
The outcome:
Defining the details of a can label can be tricky. As you’ll notice with most designs in the market, a lot of the challenge is finding enough space for all the information wanting to be shared.
This usually results in a product that has a lot of information crammed into a tiny space by being squashed and compacted. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always work from an accessibility standpoint, having point sizes so small it’s difficult to read; and when you combine this with the limitations of label printing, tiny fonts (or any tiny information, really) is easily lost by the time it comes out the other side.
Drinky Dinky challenged this by keeping the design minimal and compact, without sacrificing legibility or accessibility. We focused on 3 primary pieces of content: The front design, the ingredients, and the story behind the brand.
Drinky Dinky’s label was arguably one of my largest and most fulfilling projects in 2023, igniting a larger passion for packaging and renewing my affinity for designing for real products in the real world.
Something you can hold in your hands and enjoy in all dimensions.
Drinky Dinky achieved this in their market, and I look forward to many more projects like this, challenging what to expect in the physical product space, and contributing to an accessible and sustainable market.
Thanks again to the team over at Gnarly by Nature for the opportunity to work with them on this, and for all that’s in store for the brand as it grows.
