In my training animation project, I delved into generative geometry, also known as MoGraph in Cinema 4D. You’ve likely encountered abstract geometric shapes in TV intros and animated backgrounds — all crafted using this technology. Geometric objects transform through animated metamorphoses, a fascinating process.

In Russia where I'm from, the term “cosmonauts” refers to police security forces assigned to quell riots. However, any form of dissent, even peaceful protests, is treated as mass unrest and swiftly suppressed.

The empty paper cup is an innocuous object, it can’t hurt anyone, especially equipped with a helmet and body armor. During political protests in Russia and Belarus, these cups were hurled at “cosmonauts”. The authorities’ attempts to imprison protesters for this act seem absurd, turning the paper cup into a potent protest meme.

Zapotelo! (Fogged up)

Another poignant symbol is the fogged visor on a security officer’s helmet. On January 23, 2021, during a protest rally in St. Petersburg, a “cosmonaut” kicked 54-year-old Margarita Yudina in the stomach, sending her to the hospital. Eyewitnesses captured this act of police violence on cameras, sparking widespread outrage. Even federal media outlets (usually strictly censored regarding political protests) covered the incident. The officer was forced to apologize, he attributed his actions to a fogged visor, claiming he couldn’t see what was happening.

While the laws of physics remain steadfast, the laws of the Russian Federation often bend to the will of those in power. Our “cosmonaut” dutifully obeys the forces of inertia and gravity. Perhaps he’ll journey to the “Beautiful Russia of the future,” reflecting on the regime he defended. Alternatively, he might slip back in time, encountering his own self in a different era.
