Blood Donation App - UI Design

Case Study: Blood Donation Mobile App

Project Overview

The goal of the project was to design a mobile application for blood donors, acting as a personal health assistant. The app aimed to provide easy access to donation history, upcoming appointments, and personalized health data. The target audience included both regular donors and first-time donors. The app intended to increase donor engagement, reduce barriers in the donation process, and support blood banks by providing a user-friendly platform.

The project focused on simplicity and accessibility. The home screen displayed key stats such as blood type, amount of blood donated, and upcoming donation dates, with intuitive navigation to help users manage their donations efficiently...

Desk Research & UX Competitor Analysis

Through desk research, it was clear that most blood donation apps failed to deliver personalized user experiences and struggled with inconsistent user flows. The research highlighted a need for better donation tracking and streamlined appointment scheduling to keep users engaged.

Competitor analysis showed that existing apps lacked gamification and engaging progress visualization. Most solutions presented users with overwhelming interfaces and did not successfully motivate users to take action, which influenced the design improvements made in this app.

Key Problems & Business Challenge

Key Problems:

Users struggled with a lack of centralized donation tracking and a complex interface, making the process confusing. Inconsistent notifications and minimal personalization further reduced motivation, leading to less frequent donations.

Business Challenge:

The client needed an app to boost donor engagement by simplifying the donation process with clear tracking, personalized reminders, and an intuitive design. Additionally, the app had to enhance the brand’s image as a socially responsible entity, aligning with community health efforts and supporting their mission of aiding blood banks

My Solution = UX/UI Design

The solution included a Personalized Dashboard showing donation history, blood type, and upcoming appointments, along with a Donation Tracker to motivate users. A clean, card-based layout simplified navigation, while location services helped users book appointments at nearby centers.

The design used red, white, and green to emphasize health, with large typography for easy readability. Microinteractions, like animated progress bars, added engagement without cluttering the interface. This minimalist approach ensured a smooth, intuitive user experience.

Icon Design for iOS

The app icon was designed following Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, ensuring that it fit the aesthetic of iOS while remaining distinct and recognizable. The simple shape and cohesive color palette aligned with the platform’s design standards.

Results & Conclusion

The app was well-received, thanks to its simple design, intuitive navigation, and clear progress tracking. By simplifying the donation process and keeping users engaged with personalized reminders and notifications, the app successfully met the client’s objectives.

The key takeaway was that incorporating community-focused gamification elements, such as progress tracking, significantly boosted user motivation without the need for competitive features. The app provided both functional and emotional value, making it easier and more rewarding for users to donate blood regularly.
