Runnin' with the Devils
Up next are the Vegas Devils – the third team in the Canyon Division of the West Conference.
The universe must have a cruel sense of humor, because the Vegas Devils have never been a team of good fortune. Recently, they've been known for nailing draft picks that produce stellar rookie seasons, only for these players to face a swift decline in their sophomore campaign – be it from injury, performance dips, or the like. This seems to be a pattern – in their lone Championship Game appearance in season 15, a career altering injury to their starting quarterback led to a blowout and the team hasn't seen success since. Is it a case of bad luck, or are the Devils destined for disaster?
Visual Direction
It wasn't uncommon to see "name-swapping" between teams in the primitive years of the UFL as teams sought out their own identities. Before the Phoenix Skyhawks, there were the Phoenix Devils – the lovable losers who last a few seasons with little success before the city's modern day team ran them out of town. The team name has gone unused for over 20 seasons, and in an effort to reverse their luck, this Las Vegas franchise has given the name a new home.
IThe name fits like a glove – Las Vegas is "Sin City", the weather frequently hits triple digits, the city is built on the vices... you name it. It's almost like it was meant to be.
Execution
The Vegas Devils primary logo is a red front-facing devil, morphed in to the shape of a "V". The character's signature widow's peak hairline is implied by the four-pointed star that has become a symbol for the city, seen on the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.
For the secondary logo, the Vegas double down on the star motif. This time, the star is illustrated in the alternate eight-pointed format with the north "spike" doubling as a pitchfork. Laid atop the composition is a football with four laces, representing the team's four different nicknames in the last 28 seasons.
The Devils have a tertiary "V" logo that is pulled from the "Vegas" wordmark. It features the same silver and white outline mechanic that is used throughout the team's graphic suite. This logo is used primarily on merchandise.
Typographically-speaking, this team leans in to what we'd like to call an "art deco meets 70's horror" aesthetic. The letterforms are geometric in construction and feature art deco-like qualities but feature small "wisps" or serifs at the end of select horizontal and vertical stems. This style is carried out in both city name "Vegas" and team name "Devils" wordmarks.
The jersey number set is an extension of the team typography. With Futura Condensed used as a base, the same wisps from the wordmarks are incorporated into select forms.
House Rules
The Vegas Devils look to reverse their luck with a refreshed visual identity that includes a brand new name and a potent graphic package to carry them in to a new era of Vegas football.
