Light Over Chaos - Carlos Reiss | Book Design

I rarely talk or post about my projects in general, but I’m gradually trying to change that. In a way, I feel like a co-author of life in everything I do. The things that emerge come to life as a convergence of forces from many different places. Simple things from my daily life, academic references, people, conversations, experiences—everything, really—ends up being transformed in some way.

This project was made possible thanks to the attention and good taste of Laura Nicolli and Carlos Reiss, who gave me the opportunity to be part of something as important as a book that will remain in the history of Jewish memory in Paraná and Brazil.

The book Luz Sobre o Caos - Educação e Memória do Holocausto (Light Over Chaos - Education and Memory of the Holocaust), written by Carlos, seeks to understand and educate about how the memory of the Holocaust can and should be transmitted, so that future generations can rationally comprehend the history of their people and remain vigilant to prevent history from repeating itself.

The graphic design of the book, created in 2018, draws aesthetic references from original documents of the time. The photocompositions and layout bring lightness and modernity to the art direction without losing the seriousness of the subject. The photos, many of which are already historically well-known, come together here in a different way, alongside historical corrections that add new pieces to compose a fair and integral whole. The textured title fonts evoke the passage of time. The interior fonts, text size, and paper weight were all carefully chosen to provide reading comfort and to appeal to diverse audiences, with a design that can stand the test of time. Enjoy the view!
