Community Apps

Objective

KampungKita is a community-driven mobile app designed to strengthen ties within local Malaysian communities. The app aims to provide essential services and support through an easy-to-use platform, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual aid. It offers a range of features including emergency assistance, local commerce, community engagement, and tools tailored to the specific needs of Malaysian villages.

Features

  • Panic Button: Instantly alerts designated contacts or authorities in case of emergencies, ensuring rapid response times.

  • Makan Places: A curated list of restaurants with detailed information to help users find dining options, enhancing local commerce.

  • Sembang Komuniti: A community discussion platform that allows residents to interact, share information, and build a sense of connection.

  • Bendera Putih: A unique feature allowing users in need to signal for assistance, providing a way for community members to support each other.

  • Crowd Fund: A community fundraising tool that enables locals to raise money for various causes, supporting mutual aid within the community.

Process

  • Research: Conducted an in-depth analysis of existing products in the market, focusing on community-based applications and identifying key features that would resonate with Malaysian users.

  • Ideation & Approval: Collaborated with the directors to brainstorm and define key features, ensuring the app would meet the unique needs of the target audience.

  • Wireframing: Created wireframes to visualize the app’s layout, navigation, and flow, focusing on simplicity and accessibility.

  • Prototyping: Developed interactive prototypes in Figma to demonstrate the app’s features and gather feedback before development.

Tools

Figma for UI design and prototyping.

Challenges

The tight deadline was a major challenge, as I had to complete all the designs for each sub-feature within a week. For larger features with multiple sub-features, I allocated up to two weeks. To stay on track, I followed an efficient workflow: once I finished a sub-feature’s design and got approval from the directors, I shared it with the developers to begin the development process. This parallel workflow allowed us to stay on schedule while ensuring high-quality design.

Outcome:

  • Wide Adoption: KampungKita was adopted by nearly all villagers in Johor Bahru, showcasing the app's local impact.

  • User Feedback: Achieved a 5-star rating within 3 months of launch, indicating strong user satisfaction and community engagement.
