Objective

The goal of this project was to design a user-friendly interface for hobby farmers to efficiently manage their farms. The system needed to support functionalities such as zone mapping, sensor data monitoring, and task control (watering and lighting).

Problem

Farmers often struggle with managing different areas of their farms, especially when it comes to monitoring environmental factors (e.g., temperature, soil moisture) and scheduling necessary tasks (e.g., watering, lighting). They require an intuitive, easy-to-navigate system to manage these elements without hassle.

Research and Insights

User Persona:

Name: Sarah, a hobby farmer

• Goals: Manage her garden effectively while optimizing time and resources.

• Pain Points: Difficulties tracking sensor data and manually managing watering schedules.

Competitive Analysis:

I analysed existing farm management tools, noting that while many offer a range of features, they often lack intuitive interfaces. This highlighted an opportunity to create a design that was both robust and easy to use, especially for non-technical users.

Design Approach

1. Zone Mapping

• Users can easily define different zones within the farm using an interactive map interface.

• Each zone is color-coded for easy recognition.

2. Sensor Data Monitoring

• Displayed real-time sensor data (temperature, soil moisture, humidity) in an intuitive dashboard.

• Users can toggle between current and historical data views for deeper insights.

3. Task Control

• A simple control panel for managing tasks like watering and lighting.

• Users can schedule tasks or manually activate them.

Design Highlights

• Simplicity & Usability:

  • Designed the interface to prioritize ease of use, with a minimal learning curve for hobby farmers.

  Color Scheme:

• Purple was used as the accent color to highlight important actions, enhancing clarity and focus.

  Accessibility:

• Ensured that the design adhered to accessibility standards, making the system inclusive for all users.

Final Design

• The final UI incorporates a clean layout, intuitive controls, and the ability to manage all aspects of farm zones from a single screen. By focusing on the user’s primary needs, the design simplifies complex tasks while ensuring the system remains visually appealing and functional.
