A Cheerful Start

For the 2019 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship (Worlds 2019), three Chinese teams from the LoL Pro League (LPL) were set to compete in Europe. As they prepared for their journey, Tencent, the parent company of LoL, asked me to design a sail for a video featuring a Chinese Olympic sailor and his crew cheering on the LPL teams.

Design Concepts

The spinnaker, as the sail to be raised during the climax of the video, needed to be eye-catching. Therefore, I used the red color of the LPL logo as the primary color of the sail, complemented by wave patterns symbolising both the South China Sea, where the cheering video was filmed, and traditional Chinese culture.

The surging waves represent the three Chinese teams forging ahead through challenges. In the first version of the design, the waves wrapped around the Worlds 2019 trophy, symbolising the Chinese teams’ determination to win the championship. Later, to meet the specific requirements for the actual sail assembly and to coordinate with the content on the mainsail and jib (designed by others), the trophy was replaced with the Worlds 2019 logo.

Disclaimer: The sails other than the Spinnaker were designed by others. The “挑战依旧” (The Challenge Continues) wordmark was provided by Tencent.
