AAC for iPad

I recently started working with people on the autism spectrum, some of whom are nonverbal and rely on their AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) systems on iPads for communication at school, home, and throughout their lives.

• Augmentative: Adds to someone’s speech.

• Alternative: Replaces speech.

   

The existing AAC designs in the market are confusing and outdated. Honestly I struggled to communicate with it, and I am sure others felt the same, which motivated me to improve the user experience for them.

A straightforward interface allows users to customize symbols, pictures, and text options according to their preferences. You can change the size of the keyboard. You can go light mode or dark mode. To stay with modern UI, a huge thing is accessibility, and high contrast is part of that. I’m excited to share this project with you and hope to make a contribution to accessibility.
