BabyFM - Why you still need light mode in 2024? (despite GenZ)

If you are a GenZ chances are you remember the good old times when the WhatsApp dark mode rolled out and we all changed it.

Since then, most people switched everything to dark mode and never looked back.

We @ brigit.dev definitely couldn’t live without dark mode (since our whole brand is all about the darker theme).

But don’t be quick to discard the light mode (don't cave under GenZ pressure).

We know our client BabyFM didn’t.

Quick side note: BabyFm is a temperature and medicine tracking app that is connected to a hardware device that monitors changes in temperature for newborns. It’s a valuable health tool many parents rely on. with alerts, reminders, and different notifications parents know at any moment how their baby is feeling and they never skip important medicine intake.

So back to black.

With BabyFM’s design, we aimed to satisfy different users’ needs and preferences. 

The app has a light and a dark theme. 

This is not just for aesthetics, but also for practical purposes.

The light mode is easier to use during the day. You can see things better if you are out in the sun, and everything is much clearer. 

Also, the white color (if we can agree to call it a color), really wakes you up and makes you notice what’s written more if you are tired, sleepy, or scrolling in bed about to fall asleep. 

With a unique and sensitive user base and their special needs, being alert and presenting information clearly is crucial.

But, when using both themes remember to coordinate the color pallet of the entire platform so it actually fits two different settings. Users should see a change, but still be able to identify it as a similar alternative to the other theme.

Remember: Always see a purpose in your design, that goes beyond attractive looks.
