15/32 – Austin Lonestars

Capital Punishment

The Austin Lonestars are the third Southwest Division team – and 15th overall – for #TheUFLProject.

Season 4's Champion (and contenders in 5 of the first 10), the Lonestars are a franchise brimming with rich history in the early days – led by a bruising runningback, a tough defense, and a relentless spirit. In present day however, this team has struggled to find success. They haven't seen a winning season since 23 and currently hold the #1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. In what seems to be a perpetual rebuild, the Lonestars look to cash in on their investment and reclaim their spot at the top.

Visual Direction

Similar to the Sharks and Bandits, the Austin Lonestars are another one of the original UFL franchises, remaining virtually untouched since inception in '05. From the beginning, Austin has been the red and black team with an "'A' wearing a cowboy hat" for a logo – a cliché that has evolved in to a charmingly simple identity.

The name for this team, the "Lonestars", is derived from Texas' nickname as "the "Lone Star State". This franchise calls Austin, TX home – the state's capital.

Execution

The primary mark, of course, modernizes the original logo and every logo thereafter. A red "A" wearing a black cowboy hat laid on top of a five-pointed star is held in a thick black contained outline.

The secondary logo depicts a Texas Ranger on horseback waving the flag of Texas. The Texas Ranger Division, the state's law enforcement agency, is based in Austin. Stylistic liberties are taken with the interpretation of the flag – it's designed with the same color treatment as the primary logo.

The Lonestars also have a partial logo, described as an "L" shaped like a boot with a star in the position where a spur would be, is directly pulled from the team's classic wordmark. This typography is a preserved version of a mixed-case slab serif from sketches of old Austin Lonestars uniform designs in the archives.

For the rest of the team's typography, a square slab serif typeface was developed. It maintains the Western essence of the wordmark from above but with modern styling and taste. The "A" in the primary logo also adopts this style.

The jersey number set incorporates the square slab serif look but with a slightly taller footprint – again to accommodate the designated space for the garment.

Buckle Down

One of the classic UFL franchises has been given a restored identity that maintains the essence of the original with a hefty graphic package as the Austin Lonestars embark on an unfamiliar journey back to the top.
