Mencia - Wine Label Design
Welcome to the Wines of the World series, where today we're spotlighting Mencia. Recently, I've become captivated by the vast array of wines the world has to offer. Inspired by my New Year's resolution to create a new piece of work every day, I've decided to design a unique wine label for each type of wine I explore.
About Mencia
Mencía is a distinctive red wine grape predominantly found in the northwestern part of Spain, particularly in the regions of Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra, and Valdeorras. Known for its vivid ruby color and aromatic complexity, Mencía wines often exude fresh floral notes of violets and cherry blossoms, alongside ripe red fruit flavors like cherry and raspberry. These wines are celebrated for their bright acidity and mineral undertones, which lend a crisp, refreshing finish. Mencía wines often display a herbal, slightly earthy edge, making them excellent partners for a variety of meat dishes, especially lamb and game. This varietal is gaining popularity among wine lovers who appreciate wines with both character and finesse.
About the Design
Recently, I've been scouring the collections of the British Library, the Library of Congress, and various online archives for historical botanical illustrations. For the Mencia label, I've chosen an etched illustration of a lush red flowering vine, capturing the wine's fresh essence. This is paired with an elegant, old-world script font that reflects the storied tradition of winemaking.
