Illustration / Hand-printed Posters: Power Lies Within

Artwork in collaboration with Jamla recording artist, HaLo, paying tribute to Tommie Smith's Black Power Salute at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Given the subject of the the piece, I felt like it would be fitting to design the artwork in the style of Emory Douglas, paying tribute to the Black Panther Party's Minister of Culture. With this iconic moment taking place in Mexico City during a time in which thousands of Mexican students were also peacefully protesting the treatment of the Mexican people by their government, I wanted to acknowledge the parallels between the social movements of both our countries, so I reimagined the Black Panther logo in the style of the Mayan jaguar as a symbol of solidarity and remembrance to honor the lives of those who were lost in the Tlatelolco massacre days before the Olympic ceremonies were to begin. The message "Power Lies Within" is a call for us all to recognize the power we have to rise above historic systems of oppression.
