Kavinsky – Rampage

It’s not a coincidence that this track – an electro-heavy reinterpretation of the Dragon Ball soundtrack by the French cult musician Kavinsky – appears in my most Toriyama-influenced mix. To me, STREET FIGHTING MECHS has always been the soundtrack of an imaginary movie, filled with robots, epic martial arts fights, drama, humour and spaceships. It’s the music I would listen to in my headphones while flipping through the pages depicting Goku’s incredible battles, trying to sync every single guitar riff with punches and kicks and a shitload of Kamehamehas, creating videoclips in my mind.

Back in middle school, when I discovered Toriyama’s work, my approach to drawing changed completely, as I started absorbing his incredible style together with his taste for composition, rhythm and storytelling. Toriyama passes away, but what he created keeps living in the heart of every single individual who experienced his silly yet epic tales. Goodbye Akira, and thank you for everything!
