Music-Shaped Self | Ponyboy '18

I'm excited to share the third artwork in my "Music-Shaped Self" series, titled "Ponyboy '18”, which I created for my grad exhibition at Gallery 1313.

This self-portrait was inspired by the vibrant and upbeat alternative electronic music I was listening to in 2018, which helped me discover and embrace my intimate queer sensibility in music. Before then, I was hooked on hyperpop and was drawn to the experimental and alternative sounds of artists like Charli XCX, SOPHIE, Bad Gyal, Cashmere Cat, and ROSALÍA, who completely transformed the way I appreciated music.

In this artwork, I've incorporated a range of elements that were a response to the sonic moodboard that electronic music was offering at that time. By playing with high contrast, vivid colours, and diverse shapes and styles, I've created a richly-layered, abstract, and playful composition that bursts with colour and expression.

This era of self-discovery through sound will always hold a special place in my heart as it was a time of avant-garde exploration that was both fun and fresh. It completely blew my mind and helped me discover more about myself and my passions. I can't wait to share the last artwork I created based on my musical journey with you all!
